The best dual camera apps for iPhone in 2026

Last updated:

"Dual camera app" hides an important split: apps that expose both cameras in the same instant through Apple's multi-cam engine, and apps that shoot back-then-front sequentially and stitch the result. If the moment matters — a reaction, a stage, a kid mid-jump — sequential capture misses it by definition.

Everything below does true simultaneous capture.

The short list

Selfie — dual capture with vintage filters. Simultaneous front-and-back photos and videos (with sound), picture-in-picture with corner and frame-color control, and the thing nothing else in this list has: 50+ vintage camera presets — 35mm film, medium format, instant, VHS, CCTV, thermal — rendered live on both cameras. Free to try; iOS 17+.

MixCam — the established one. The best-known front-and-back app, with photos, videos and multiple layouts including split-screen. Filters are conventional color adjustments rather than film emulation. If layout variety is your priority, it's the benchmark.

Dualgram — the minimalist. Straightforward dual photos with a handful of layouts. Less to learn, less to configure.

ReFrame — the multi-angle recorder. A newer entrant focused on multi-angle video recording; growing quickly and worth watching if video is your entire use case.

A note on BeReal: it popularized the format, but it's a social network, not a camera — one prompt a day, sequential (not simultaneous) capture, and your photo lives in a feed. For the format as a tool, use a camera app. (Full comparison.)

A note on iPhone 16 Dual Capture: Apple's native mode does dual video only, on iPhone 16 and newer, with a fixed layout and no filters. (Details.)

How to choose

  • You want the shot to have a look — film grain, instant frames, VHS: Selfie is the only dual-capture app with a real vintage preset system.
  • You want split-screen layouts: MixCam.
  • You want the simplest possible dual photo: Dualgram.
  • You record multi-angle video professionally: ReFrame.

Common questions

How do I know if an app captures simultaneously? Film a fast-moving scene and compare the two views frame by frame — sequential apps show a visible delay. Apps built on AVCaptureMultiCamSession (everything in the list above) don't.

Do dual camera apps work on older iPhones? Multi-cam capture requires iPhone XS/XR or newer. Selfie needs iOS 17, which the same models support.

Can any of these use the 0.5x ultra-wide in dual mode? No — Apple's multi-cam engine requires the standard wide lenses when both cameras run. That's a platform constraint, not an app choice. (Why, in detail.)

Selfie — front and back camera at once, with vintage filters.
